M&Ms and hair dye.

It was the fun size package, and this confuses me because I surely think the fun size should be much larger. But nonetheless, I sorted them by color. And lined them up. And then began eating them one color at a time, one M&M at a time. { Something like what you see in this picture. But I’m actually more OCD than the person who gets the photo cred here, because I would have all my M&Ms either label up or label down, but definitely not mixed. }

With sorting over and eating commenced, I was down to my last color before it dawned on me:

I wish all of life was M&Ms.

And not because they’re chocolate, but because wouldn’t it be easier if all my “junk” could be neatly organized and sorted into manageable groups. Problems in this group. Doubts and fears go here. Irritations, get yourself to the brown group. Challenges, you are red.

But life is not M&Ms, so you need hair dye.

Let me explain.

One of my girls was released from prison today. She had served 20 years behind the fences.
20 years. She was absolutely terrified to be going home. Why? Because all of life is not M&Ms. And the issues and problems and doubts and fears and challenges she has to face will absolutely not be sorted into any manageable groups whatsoever. Instead they will bombard her and crash down on her and threaten to suffocate her and likely even cause her to wish more than once that she could go back to prison. Every word of that is true. I know because I’ve heard it from every one of the girls who has gone home before her.

So what did she do?

As soon as she got “home,” she dyed her hair.

And after I laughed my head off about it, I got to thinking. She is on to something.

We make our world better by making one thing at a time better.

I will not solve, fix, cure, or heal every problem, issue, pain, challenge or hurt in the world tomorrow. You won’t either. But today I can do one thing that makes our world a tiny bit better.

What will you do?

May we know Him and make Him known.

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others,
as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
1 Peter 4:10

  1. Spot on!! Focus on what you can do today, not what you didn’t finish yesterday and not what’s waiting tomorrow – do the best you can for today’s challenge…
